Love Letters      A Play by A. R. Gurney Directed by Kathleen Kenny Love Letters was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama. The two-character show takes the audience on an emotional ride through the lives of free-spirited Melissa Gardner and the conservative, law-abiding Andrew Makepeace Ladd III. Wealthy and privileged WASPs, they are lifelong friends and sometime lovers who, in the production, share their most intimate thoughts sitting side by side at tables. Andy wrote his first letter to Melissa to tell her she looked like a lost princess. They were both seven years old. Over the next fifty years, through personal triumphs and despair, through wars and marriages and children and careers, they poured out the secrets of their hearts, discussed their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats. They defied a fate that schemed to keep them apart, and lived – through letters – for the one most meaningful thing: their undying love for each other.

  • Empire Stage

1140 N. Flagler Dr. Fort Lauderdale

    954-678-1496

If you don't get lost looking for Empire Stage for the first time, then congratulations: You'd be the first. But this playhouse's locational obscurity is actually part of its charm; just as with Sol Theatre, the building's previous occupant, Empire Stage remains the best-kept secret in the South Florida theater scene. Artistic director David Gordon specializes in offbeat comedies with an LGBT slant, but even when his company isn't producing anything, he lends out the space to other producers to help keep the threadbare operation in business. Even when the plays occasionally crater, the funky, DIY interior design and free wine make it a fun place to visit.

  • Olympia Theater

174 E. Flagler St., Miami Central Dade

    305-372-0925

Old is the new new. Especially in a city like Miami, where historic charms are often bulldozed to make way for new school crap. Thank God for the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, a shining beacon to Miami's glamorous past, smack dab in the middle of downtown. Erected in 1926 as a home for silent movies, this recently restored palace oozes charisma, from the red velvet curtains to the baroque balconies. The theater's simulated night-sky ceiling has looked down on the likes of Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Luciano Pavarotti and countless other notable names. Today, they host movie screenings, concerts, live performances and a whole host of other events. So get glammed up and spend an evening immersed in what once was. There's something to be said for the classics, after all.
