  • Art and Culture Center of Hollywood

    1650 Harrison St. Hollywood

    954-921-3274

Unfettered by the demands of the commercial marketplace, the privately supported Art and Culture Center has taken that freedom and run with it, charting a course that sometimes appears to be fearless. Where else, for instance, would you find something as esoteric as "Exploding the Lotus"? That multimedia show displayed the work of nearly two dozen artists from the Indian subcontinent with a strong emphasis on the conceptual. Or how about "Nathan Sawaya: The Art of the Brick," an exhibition of art made exclusively with Lego parts? And we're still scratching our heads over the quirkiness of the recent "TM Sisters: Idealtonight." Under such adventurous previous curators as Laurence Pamer and Samantha Salzinger, the center has long challenged established norms, preferring edge over ease. Current curator Jane Hart has pushed things even further, especially with the Project Room, which presents small shows of the sort you'd be unlikely to find anywhere else in the area.

  • The Bubble

810 NE Fourth Ave. Fort Lauderdale

    954-562-3804

Founded by local promoter couple-extraordinaire Garo Gallo and Yvonne Colón, IWAN space the Bubble warehouse/gallery/music venue serves as a hub for Broward County's creative base. Imagine concert-hall-quality acoustics, 3,000 square feet to boogie your ass off or wallflower around (this doesn't include the giant space outside), two stages, and loads of local art littering the walls by artists such as Lisa Parrott, Peter Giovenco, Erick Arenas, and Francesco LoCastro. (Fun fact: LoCastro also painted the rad mural that covers the front of the warehouse.) Gallo and Colón conceptualized the downtown Fort Lauderdale spot years ago as a venue where oft-underrepresented artists can display their work, indie musicians can rehearse and record, and networking and promotion will help solidify the local arts community. Their vision officially began to materialize in April 2009, when the couple purchased the space. Since then, they've been booking acts, showcasing countless artists, and renovating tirelessly. "This way, we don't have to answer to club owners with bad taste," Gallo quipped.
