  • Atlantic Surf Club

17 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-256-7873

The clean and modern décor of the Atlantic Surf Club is a stark contrast to the dark sports-bar-type aesthetics of the majority of Beach Place. With varying shades of soft blues, pops of orange, warm woods, stainless-steel accents, and sea-glass-inspired light fixtures, the ambiance incorporates contemporary dining concepts for an atmosphere that is trendy without the pretense; beachy and inviting. And the food offers a welcome alternative to the sports bar fare found at the rest of the plaza. Dishes range from burgers and thin-crust pizzas (think salumis and chicken pesto) to lobster mac 'n' cheese and tuna tartare.

  • El Camino

15 NE Second Ave. Delray Beach

    561-265-5093

Delray Beach wasn't complete until it received its new taqueria-ish El Camino. Here, owners Brandon Belluscio, Brian Albe, and Anthony Pizzo -- also of Cut 432 and Park Tavern -- deliver Mexican soul food and a topnotch tequila bar just a few steps from the city's Atlantic Avenue restaurant row, at the entrance to Pineapple Grove. The building is adorned with colorful street-style graffiti from artist Ruben Ubiera, including a custom portrait of Emiliano Zapata Salazar, leader of the Mexican Revolution -- along with Day of the Dead skulls and an El Camino car. Inside, bright lime-green booth seating and a handmade, rustic wood-beam bar run the length of the space where bartenders sling craft-style margaritas and customers put them back like they're nothing more than water on a hot summer day. The establishment offers patrons a taste of Mexico through the lens of executive chef Victor Meneses, originally from Juarez. Like the drinks, the food is a little more craft than you'd expect, including hand-formed blue corn tortillas, homemade chorizo, and more than a dozen sauces, including Meneses' secret recipe for hot sauce. In addition to tacos, speciality items adorn the appetizer and entree menu, with highlights like smoked brisket nachos and charred octopus or chili relleno pan-fried with egg -- no breading -- to keep with Meneses' family recipe. A favorite starter: the crispy fried pork skins, or chicharron. Crunchy strips of fried pig's ear let off a muffled pop in your mouth with every bite, like some sort of edible fire cracker, served with a cactus slaw and sour cream. Read our full review.

  • Kaos Ultra Lounge

2724 E. Commercial Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-975-8000

Kaos Ultra Lounge has the look of a South Beach club and the drink specials of a Fort Lauderdale Beach dive, all strangely located in a quiet plaza off of Commercial Boulevard. This modestly sized, chromed-out “lounge” in Fort Lauderdale features a curving, neon-back-lit bar, glass-tiled DJ booth, plenty of high-top table seating, and crystal orbs of pulsating purple light that glow over an intimate dance floor. Despite its off-the-beaten track location, puzzling name, and somewhat misguided identity as a lounge, this new bar draws an impressive and eclectic crowd on weekends, due in part to its three-for-one domestic draft beer special and an ever-changing lineup of music.

  • 84 Diner

    11432 W. SR-84 Fort Lauderdale

    954-423-1787

This behemoth of a diner is a South Florida staple, with a menu nearly as expansive as the multiple dining rooms. At 84 Diner, in Davie, breakfast is served all day long -- as it should be -- with three-egg omelets, biscuits and gravy, and Mickey Mouse pancakes at the ready no matter the hour. But eggs and batter aren't the only ways to throw your cholesterol out of whack; there are also meaty dishes like the Hawaiian ham steak, or carby treats like the baked lasagna, as well as Coney classics like hot dogs and Greek dishes.

  • Acapulco Lindo

    2361 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors

    954-561-5151

This Manors mainstay gets no points for style but scores big for stick-to-your-ribs substance. You can go the Mexican route with the super nachos (each chip is loaded with the perfect amount of cheese, beans, guacamole, and sour cream) and a verde burrito stuffed with savory chunks of beef or chicken slathered in a tangy tomatillo salsa. Or you can do the Cuban thing with a pan-fried palomilla steak, pounded into delicious submission. But the truly savvy customers go straight for the short-and-sweet Salvadoran section of the menu: the char-broiled bistec Salvadoreño, slathered in a heady tomato-onion-pepper sauce, and the beefy sopa de res.

  • Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts

1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami Central Dade

    305-949-6722

The Adrienne Arsht Center might be Miami's most beautiful building. Any way you slice it, the modern tribute to glass and steel is a bold reminder of our city's commitment to the arts. Most major shows make a stop at the Arsht Center, from Les Miserables to the Boston Pops. The largest performing arts center in Florida, this 5,000 seat apex is comfy indeed. There's a concert hall, a theater in the round, an outdoor performance space and even a swanky eatery on site. Sure, a visit to the Arsht ain't cheap - you'll pay a pretty penny for drinks and snacks and probably tickets (although deals do abound) - but it's so worth it to nourish your starving intellect, now isn't it?

  • Alegria Tacos

3801 N. Andrews Ave. Oakland Park

  • Ambry Restaurant

3016 E. Commercial Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-771-7342

Despite its diminutive appearance, the Ambry has a maze of tables and booths and a healthy-sized bar from which to consume the thickest, frothiest brews in town. Beer steins adorn shelves, shadow boxes contain trinkets, and numerous woodwind instruments dangle from the ceiling. The crowded bar boasts a row of topped-off steins, and soccer team flags and fake flowers decorate the little alcohol-vending alcove. Dark and packed with more tchotchkes than your grandma's apartment, the Ambry looks every bit of its 30 year pedigree. From the outside, it looks like a medieval castle with German and American flags on the ramparts. Inside, the dark, winding corridors reveal private rooms anchored by warm hearths. Up front is a bar that's covered with so much German soccer memorabilia you'd half expect to find World Cup hero Bastian Schweinsteiger chilling there with a pint of Tucher Hefeweizen in hand. Instead you'll find plenty of regulars hoisting decorative steins, eating ruby-hued prime rib specials, and noshing on supple, house-made sausages with rustic mustard sauce. A great place to drink, and good for a bite, too.
