  • Rock Bar

219 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-728-9804

Fort Lauderdale Beach's newly renovated Rock Bar looks like how it sounds -- cheesy, lowbrow, and fun. An edgy red and black motif is complemented by record-sleeve-lined walls, bathtub-sized margarita glasses, and the biggest disco ball you'll probably ever see in your life. Ample indoor/outdoor seating; lots of cheap, beachy drink specials; and uncomfortably loud electronic (curiously, not rock) music streaming over the sidewalk make this an ideal location for a 20-something crowd, especially during spring-break season. And even though the oceanfront views are great, what rock-inspired lounge would be complete without a dark and seedy backdoor-accessible counterpart? Inside and behind Rock Bar is Exit 66, an enormous, Americana-themed dance room, complete with its own separate tiki bar and swimming pool out back. The possibilities for debauchery are virtually endless.

Accept this comfortable beachside joint for what it's meant to be: a bar-food-serving, sports-channel-showing, '80s-greatest-hits-playing kind of place. Serving sliders, pizza, fish 'n' chips, paninis, peel 'n' eat shrimp 50 yards from the water.

  • Aruba Beach Cafe

1 E. Commercial Blvd., Fort Lauderdale Beaches

    954-776-0001

As far as bars go, Aruba Beach Cafe is quintessential South Florida livin'. It hasn't really changed much since it opened in 1983. Both tourists and locals frequent this classically Floridian (read: pastel-colored), upbeat eatery located on the water next to the Commercial Boulevard Pier. In addition to a menu of delectable seafood entrees, two bars offer fruity cocktails, serious cocktails, and the company of locals and tourists. The menu includes seafood favorites like conch fritters, a fresh mahi-mahi sandwich, and the blackened seafood trio, plus turf specialties like the Aruba burger and the goat cheese salad. Watching the beach through the vast ceiling-to-floor windows may be the main draw, but people also love the laid-back atmosphere. Flip-flop your way in to hear live music any day of the week. Steel drums provide island versions of your Top 40 favorites. The hardest choice you'll have to make will be between indoor seating with a view or outdoor seating overlooking the beach. After all, Aruba's sandy spot next door to Commercial Boulevard fishing pier makes it the bona fide beach spot in a village of beach spots.

  • Bokamper's Sports Bar & Grill

1280 S. Pine Island Rd., Plantation Fort Lauderdale

    954-533-7152

Dolphins vet (and Plantation resident) Kim "Kimbo" Bokamper started this neighborhood hang to indulge his sports fetish, and it shows. Fifty plasma TVs enough for ya? If you know what most places with that sort of cathodic bling are like in terms of atmosphere, you probably have a good idea what to expect from the food. A few entrees, like the blackened swordfish sandwich and Bo's burger (with a fried egg poised atop) stand out on the menu, but beers, wings, and football: That trusty trifecta is always going strong at Bokamper's.

  • Brickell Irish Pub

1451 S. Miami Ave., Miami Central Dade

    305-381-6651

Brickell Irish Pub is rather like a very dark sports bar: lots of plasma TV sets, rock music, and so forth. If that's not your cup of brew, there's a brighter, quieter outdoor dining patio. Either way, you can choose from dozens of bottled beers at $4.50 to $5.50 and ten drafts at $6.25 per pour. The menu proffers about a half-dozen each of pub snacks, starters, salads, sandwiches, burgers, dinner entrées, and sides. What differentiates a "pub snack" from a "starter" is vague; the first category includes fish dip, Buffalo shrimp, mozzarella sticks, and potato skins; the latter brings, among other things, chicken wings, chicken tenders, and beef sliders. We advise to avoid the fish dip. Begin instead with char-grilled sliders or a pan-seared Irish fish cake flaky with smoked salmon and cod. Fish 'n' chips, shepherd's pie, and Irish stew were solid if not sensational. The only problem with a dessert called "McKrispy's bread pudding" is that it wasn't crisp enough. Service is amateurish, but prices are forgiving: All pub snacks and starters are under $10, all main courses less than $20.
  • Brother Tuckers

3332 E. Atlantic Blvd. Pompano Beach

    954-785-1984

Remember Friar Tuck, that rotund disciple of Robin Hood whose proselytizations involved food and booze more often than God? Well, if the goodly father had found his way from 11th-century England and somehow landed smack in the middle of Pompano Beach, he'd have quit the priesthood and opened Brother Tuckers, a saintly themed gastropub that seeks perfection in its most ingestible forms. It's a hole in the wall that would feel dusty if it weren't so clean and homey, literally hidden behind red brick and old wood. Inside, punters sip dozens of varieties of Belgian and Old World brews from style-appropriate glassware (snifters, pint glasses, mugs, and goblets) and feast on the small-but-well-conceived menu of upscale pub food. Daily specials (Thursday to Sunday) offer great variety, like a juicy, fresh mozzarella-and-bacon-stuffed meat-loaf sandwich or sirloin steak pounded thin and doused in homemade chimichurri. Other menu choices include salads with cranberries and grilled chicken, pork tenderloin with "Tucker" BBQ sauce, and a Monk's pizza with clams, garlic, and oregano. The house burger, decked in salsa and jalapeños, could make a case for best in SoFla. Tuckers closing times aren't posted, though it stays open fairly late for those seeking to revel in the great food, beer, and atmosphere.

  • Bru's Room Sports Grill

5460 W. Hillsboro Blvd. Coconut Creek

Adore the new girlfriend but still not sure whether she can handle your Sunday football fanaticism? Then take her to this game-day headquarters and test her endurance. If she's a keeper, she won't mind your attention drifting to one of several TVs broadcasting football, baseball, basketball, wrestling and NASCAR because she'll be entranced in the Dolphins game anyways. If she bellys up to the bar with you for $1.50 drafts and a heaping plate of Triple Threat wings (BBQ, Sweet 'N' Tangy and grilled with minced garlic) then take her home to meet the folks tonight. Deep-fried pickle chips, toasted ravioli with marinara sauce, hand-tossed pizzas and Angus beef burgers may inspire you to ask the staff if they'll cater your upcoming nuptials. That is of course, if Bru's namesake Bob "Bru" Brudzinski will officiate the services. A kid-friendly atmosphere ensures many visits for the two of you for years to come.

Dining here would seem to be a completely superfluous activity (just try to find a menu online) compared to the real draw of the place: Ten bars with nearly 100 televisions; a "Media Room" beaming 8 satellite sports stations at once; big-party weekend blowouts with VIP rooms, $250 bottles of liquor and a $10 cover charge just to get in after 9 p.m. This place draws one of the most ethnically-mixed crowds around -- they have Latina nights, Caribbean DJs, and also do bar mitzvahs. Yes, there is a dress code.

  • Champps Americana

6401 N. Andrews Ave. Oakland Park

    954-491-9335

Champps Americana, part of a sports bar and restaurant chain, is loaded with TV screens so you can catch the various games from one seat. Warning: No one will leave this place hungry. The portions here are huge, and it's likely you'll have to ask the server for a doggy bag. The portions match the spacious dining area, with high ceilings and a large bar area. The menu boasts burgers, sandwiches, specialty dishes, and pasta and, of course, includes the standard American sports bar appetizers. Family-friendly, Champps offers free food for kids during certain times of the week, and happy hour deals bring on big smiles for the adults.

941 E. Cypress Creek Rd., Fort Lauderdale Oakland Park

    954-771-6337

In Fort Lauderdale, bars come and go quicker than the tide rolls in, but every now and then, one opens and decades later new generations of locals are filling up the barstools, just like here at Cheers. From neon signs to pool tables and sports memorabilia, the drinking hole has all the quintessential trimmings, but it’s the patrons who give it real character. On weekends, the stage is filled with an array of bands, but during the week, patrons can take their shot on the stage at open-mic night or karaoke.

  • Cheetah

497 NW 31st Ave. Pompano Beach

    954-971-2600

Strip clubs appeal to the simplest impulse of man: sex. So how did we let the strip club become so damned high-concept? Is the modern man really unsatisfied with merely the sight of impossibly gorgeous nude women? Must he also be seated on some regal piece of furniture within a palatial space throbbing with neon, nibbling on an impeccably cooked filet mignon? No, give him a stiff drink and show him some boobs and the modern man's a happy camper. This is the streamlined, classic approach at Cheetah's in Pompano Beach. Five beautiful women are dancing nude on stage while another dozen or so cavort in various states of undress on the club floor, in the VIP areas, or on the 13 "full friction" chairs. The music isn't so deafening that you can't have a conversation. There aren't laser beams shooting off every wall. This place isn't trying to be anything but what it is: a good titty bar.

  • Ends Meat

    1910 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood

    954-391-7400

Here's to hoping nothing changes — as so many good fish tacos at new restaurants almost always do — with Ends Meat chef-owner Kevin Dreifuss' satisfying combination of fresh catch married with a piquant slaw accented with a spicy chipotle aioli, cotija cheese, and large sprigs of fresh cilantro. It's just one of many dishes that are executed perfectly with a creative touch and an eye for detail, while still managing to be fun and approachable. Located in downtown Hollywood, it's a first restaurant for Dreifuss, whose modern-American eatery is earning rave reviews with locals and foodies alike, drawing crowds from as far as the chef's former stomping grounds in Miami for a taste of his creative, quirky dishes. Open for both lunch and dinner, the restaurant's two menus open with similar items. Day and night you'll find close to a dozen starters and a raw bar that includes ceviche, smoked prawns, and an assortment of East or West Coast oysters served with the chef's own apple mignonette and a housemade smoked red pepper cocktail sauce that's good enough to eat on its own. Further down you'll find some of the chef's best creations, ones he's perfected over the years, including mahi-mahi fish sausages and lump crab taquitos. Reuben egg rolls are a must — even if you're not a fan of Reuben sandwiches or traditional egg rolls -- slow-cooked corned beef chopped until it's blended into a fine mince and stuffed into crispy egg roll shells with Swiss cheese and sauerkraut. Of course, dessert shouldn't be overlooked, and all of it is handcrafted with the same passionate enthusiasm as the main plates by Dreifuss' wife Georgianna. A de facto manager and also the restaurant's in-house pastry chef, she's constantly baking up a variety of fresh cakes and pies.Read our full review.
