  • Churchill's Pub

5501 NE Second Ave., Miami Central Dade

    305-757-1807

Miami is sorely lacking in decent rock clubs, so Churchill's is home to many a scruffy punker who is too real for South Beach. A pair of pool tables, a large room for bands, and a sizable outdoor patio help house the mainland rock faithful.

  • The Field Irish Pub & Eatery

3281 Griffin Rd., Dania Beach Fort Lauderdale

    954-964-5979

Walk into this authentic Irish Pub and you will be instantly transported to a small farmtown in the countryside without leaving the confines of Dania Beach. Not only can you get a proper Guinness, Smithwicks, Harp or Strongbow on tap, you can add a nip of whiskey, and an order of blood pudding. The heavy wood tables at the Field are the perfect place to slam them when you're done. The bar top is as Irish a smiling lass in Carlingford, and the seats are just as comfortable. Nautical adornments, weathered art, vintage books, and an ancient looking fireplace fill out the space.

  • The Frog and Toad

5782 Powerline Rd., Oakland Park Fort Lauderdale

    954-491-3697

A terrific representative of the cherished British pub, this cheerfully decorated, low-ceilinged tavern looks like a hobbit hole. But the feed is more for giants than little people -- outstanding mussels in curry sauce, fish and chips that ooze fresh appeal, and meaty bangers and mash simultaneously fill the Anglophile and native Brit. Entertainment by way of weekly trivia contests, board games, wide-screen TV soccer matches, and just darned good people-watching add to the pub's flair. As does the multitude of frog figurines and kitschy collectibles, many donated by Frog fans, that provide the gist of the décor.

  • The King's Head Pub

500 E. Dania Beach Blvd., Dania Beach Hollywood

    954-922-5722

From the outside, the place looked like a little bed-and-breakfast that belongs in New Hampshire. From the inside, the place looks like somebody stuck a dining hall from the English countryside onto an Old World pub. The walls are covered in knick-knacks from the Old Country, including photos of old trucks and half-century-old alcohol labels. There's so much attention to detail that while eating, Henry VIII and his wives watch over you. The food's topnotch and served until 11 p.m. The beer flows from the taps as fast as you can drink it until 2 a.m. on the weekends.

  • Maguire's Hill 16

535 N. Andrews Ave. Fort Lauderdale

    954-764-4453

Although other Irish bars may stay slightly truer to the Irish Pub image -- Waxy O'Connor's and the Field spring immediately to mind -- Maguires, which is owned by an Irish family, still retains a huge helping of mementos and scenery from the Auld Sod. With numerous "Best Of" awards under its belt, this cozy, downtown Fort Lauderdale neighborhood Irish bar is truly a place for all occasions, be it a raucous Saint Patrick's Day party, an afterwork drinking session, or dinner with the fam. Traditional fare like bangers 'n' mash and lamb stew mingles with sandwiches, salads, and some very large burgers. Drinks are poured strong by a staff that knows just how you like 'em, and a two-for-one happy hour includes free bites of food.

  • Ye Olde Falcon Pub

2867 S. University Dr., Davie Fort Lauderdale

    954-424-0300

Sometimes, British-themed pubs exist primarily for drinking and listening to live music, not so much for the dining experience. Olde Falcon isn't one of those, even though their 50-odd strong draft beer list is the main draw. On one hand, the Falcon Pub is stereotypical: dark-wood-paneled interior, sports on the TVs. The music is cranked up loud, and the clientele are usually young folks watching a game and knocking back some good brew. But the kitchen is way above average, with a smattering of American favorites (pot roast, etc.) nestled between the standard bangers and mash and shepherd's pie. On your first visit, make sure to get the fish and chips - it's a standout. Some of the items you have to know about and ask for (like duck tenders with delicious orange sauce). Hit those puppies with a pint of Dead Guy Ale or Fuller's ESB (or a peach lambic if you're feeling extra-fruity) and feed your epicurean frenzy.
