  • 13 Even

    2037 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors

    954-565-8550

13|Even, owned by the same couple that runs landmark lesbian bar New Moon just up Wilton Drive, is more a place to meet friends for drinks and fun than it is a dinner destination. If you get hungry, there is an array of globally inspired, fair-priced small plates such as a bruschetta, three-cheese-stuffed portabella mushrooms and an amped-up macaroni and cheese. Really, though, you come for the more than two dozen craft beers from local and national brewers and for the extensive wine list. On weekends, prepare to wade through two or three rows of people to get to the weathered wood bar, but don't worry. While you wait, you can scope out the cool chairs made of recycled palettes, the black-and-white photos shot by owner Carol Moran, and the foot-tall Elvis figurine striking a pose near some suds.

  • Naked Grape Wine Bar

    2039 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors

    954-563-5631

Pairing exquisite wines and cheeses is already an art form. So when we admit that the Naked Grape elevates it even further, we're not sure what to call it. Oeneriffic? Fromagasmic? With 40 wines by the glass (rotating on a menu that changes every fortnight), your waiter will direct you to some of the more potent combinations. And he'll do that while you're bathed in cozy, romantic candlelight. Additionally, you'll be bombarded with unfamiliar wines, since the vast majority are from small-batch boutique wineries. That's not to say the Grape won't let you quaff an ale - on the contrary, it's well-stocked with domestic micros and specialty imports. In 2008, New Times named Naked Grape the best place to meet intelligent gay menÂ? so you may want to wear those horn-rimmed glasses and the tweed sweater with elbow patches. We've seen no signs of dumbing down.

  • Smoke Cafe

3337 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale Beaches

    954-565-1942

Finally, a place where smokers don't have to feel ostracized. Smoke Café, nestled in a colorful, Old Florida plaza off A1A and Oakland Park, offers its customers more than 100 types of cigars, along with hookah tobacco. The hearty aroma wafts around the entrance, greeting you at the door or as you walk by to other neighborhood businesses like Bruce's Tattoo shop or the famous Café Martorano. The wooden décor and wall-sized wine rack give the small space a cozy yet sophisticated feel. In a not-so-sophisticated turn, customers can also power up the Wii for some videogame fun. Smoke Café doesn't serve liquor, but it carries wine, 50 kinds of beer, and sake. Free food is served on Monday and Tuesday with the purchase of smokes or drink.

  • Truluck's Seafood, Steak & Crab House

2584 E. Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-396-5656

TruluckÂ?s keeps its own crab fishing fleet of 16 boats outside of Naples, Florida, where it hauls in enough crab to provide the chain with seriously fresh claws during season: "From our traps to your table in less than 24 hours." You can chow down the large claws for $10.99 each any time, either alone or as part of a "build your own" seafood tower, but every Monday night at TruluckÂ?s is a crab massacre -- $54.00 for all the stone crab claws you can eat, plus grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes. It may sound like mayhem, but youÂ?ll be sucking those claws in style: The Fort Lauderdale location is beautifully appointed with leather booths inside and glass tables on the terrace, plus a wide-ranging wine list offering dozens of wines by the glass or flight. ThereÂ?s also a good selection of fresh Â? never frozen Â? fish that changes depending on availability, either simply grilled or fancied up.

  • Wine Watch

    901 Progresso Dr. Fort Lauderdale

    954-523-9463

Living in a town packed with chain wine megastores like ABC Wine & Spirits and Total Wine had winos thirsting for a proper wine shop. Enter Wine Watch. If there is one thing proprietor Andrew has, it's a palette for vino. Like wine aficionados the world over, his prospective is of a taster, not a maker. He's obsessed with the customer's selection process and loves helping customers choose a wine that will match with their food. In fact -- disclaimer -- he serves as master sommelier for New Times' annual Pairings event, matching wines with specific dishes from South Florida's finest restaurants. But Andrew works his magic on a small scale too -- come in with a dinner party menu and his staff will have you set up with libations for the whole evening. The shop also has a catering company.
