  • Annie's Pizza & Subs

    2524 N. State Road 7 Margate

    954-970-5117

Finding good pizza outside of New York is a tall order -- particular in South Florida, where many picky former Northeasterners make their home. But Annie's Pizza and Subs in Margate makes the cut. Their pies have all the necessary ingredients: copious quantities of cheese, plenty of grease, just the right amount of sauce. They also cook up the all-important garlic rolls, fried calamari, chicken wings, calzones, strombolis, manicotti, hot and cold subs and every other Italian stand-by you could possibly desire. So stop whining about missing New York food and give Annie's a go.

Flat-screen televisions that play football and baseball packages line the top of the bar and one inside wall. • Billy's Tavern

    8580 W. State Road 84, Plantation Davie/West Hollywood

    954-475-9464

Friendliness and casual comfort define the sports haven Billy's Tavern in Davie. Located on the tail end of a strip mall, Billy's gathers Pittsburgh enthusiasts and football regulars whose hearts pump black and gold blood and whose eyes are glued to the large projection screen on Sundays. But Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens fans don't have to fret, the welcoming environment extends from the customers to the waitresses to the bartenders. The pub only serves beer and wine, in addition to a full menu. But don't come here for the impressive selection of exotic brews or a perfectly blackened grouper. Instead head to Billy's for all the familiar faces during a happy hour that runs 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

  • Blue Willy's Barbecue

1190 E. Commercial Blvd. Oakland Park

    954-224-6120

There's barbecue, and then there's good barbecue. At Blue Willy's BBQ in Oakland Park, you'll get some of the best Texas-style barbecue around, meats such as beef brisket and pork spare ribs prepared the same way chef-owner Will Banks' grandfather cooked them at the family's butcher shop-turned-restaurant. It all starts with the meat, delivered by the same purveyor for over six years, one reason his 'cue remains consistent and some of the best in the tri-county area, from the meaty spare ribs to the juice-dribbling brisket. Aquick drive from I-95 and just a stone's throw from Dixie Highway, the restaurant attracts hundreds of patrons that visit each day. A towering Blue Willy's sign marks the spot, impossible to miss. The menu is the same one Banks has been serving for close to a decade, ten items in all, including five well-constructed staples and five sides, the meat smoked in Banks' hickory-fueled monster, a well-seasoned piece of equipment that's been running almost 24 hours a day for nearly 24 years. In Texas, beef is king, and beef brisket is what Banks does best. His comes out moist and smoky, blanketed in a dense blanket of spices charred black from the smoker, and rendered tender enough to cut with a fork. But make no mistake, though: Banks knows what to do with the hog too. His spare ribs, often considered the Holy Grail of good barbecue, remain this food critic's favorite in these parts. They boast a mélange of flavors, from the pasty spice rub that stains the meat (and your fingers) a rust-colored red to the delicate kiss of hardwood smoke and the distinct flavor of perfectly cooked pork. The juicy, fatty meat is so tender it tugs cleanly off the bone, no scraping or sucking needed. If you so choose, you can end it with Banks' grandfather's tangy, vinegary-sweet barbecue sauce. So what's the secret to all that meaty goodness? Lots of smoke and love.Read our full review.

  • The Cheese Course

2866 N University Dr. Coral Springs

    954-345-3771

Let's face it: Cheese makes everything better. The Cheese Course -- a chain with four locations throughout South Florida -- is a nod to the stores of Europe that sell one item done extremely well. Patrons wander through the odorous shop and are encouraged to sample from more than 150 cheeses from all over the world before making selections. Take a seat, in the Boca shop, and enjoy a custom cheese plate sampler, or order from the bistro menu (sandwiches, salads, omelets). Knowledgeable staff help steer unsure eaters in the right direction. Throughout the month, people are encouraged to come in for classes on pairings, specialty cheeses, and cooking demonstrations from "the Cheesemonger" at the Cheese Course.
  • Cheesesteak Experience

3341 NE 32nd St. Fort Lauderdale

    954-616-5468

At the corner of A1A and Oakland Park Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale you'll find the Cheesesteak Experience, a family-owned and operated establishment that makes a sandwich that rivals most others in the area. Open since 2006, they're serving some of the best cheesesteaks around, each made with chopped South Philly Brand sirloin steak imported straight from Philadelphia, authentic Amoroso steak rolls brought in daily, and tops with Cheez Whiz. The menu boasts six different steak-based cheesesteaks, and 10 chicken cheesesteaks -- including an onion ring and buffalo chicken version.

  • Chef's Palette Cafe and Grill

1650 SE 17th St. Fort Lauderdale

    954-760-7957

Proving grounds for the students of the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and open only a few nights a week, Chef's Palette provides an unusual dining experience. The school is located just beside the 17th Street bridge, and its see-through design lets you get a view of the action in the kitchen. Doesn't everyone look cute in chef's hats? One could argue that diners are taking a risk, because the cooks are in training, but the menu skews upscale, and teachers' expectations are high. Lunch is a prix-fixe three-course arrangement with soup/salad and fish, chicken, lamb, or beef. Chef's Palette provides an interesting, classroomesque take on fine dining.Read our full review.

  • Chico's Place

4819 N. Dixie Highway, Lighthouse Point Pompano Beach

    954-420-0088

At this unassuming Portuguese restaurant, there's cod-and-jumbo-clam stew; deep-fried cod with onions and fried potatoes in garlic sauce; grilled cod with steamed potatoes, olive oil, and garlic sauce; cod covered in onions and mayonnaise with mashed potatoes; and a lot more. Of the 30 or so entrées on the regular menu, 15 are cod dishes and none are poultry (though there are a couple on the smaller Brazilian menu). Don't try to go low-fat or low-carb. Olive oil is good for you, and more important, hearty comfort food is what they do best.

  • Chuck's Steak House

2428 E. Commercial Blvd., Fort Lauderdale Beaches

    954-772-2850

Chuck's Steak House founding partner Chuck Rolles opened his first steak house in 1959 in Waikiki, Hawaii. Today, there's one other location, in Fort Lauderdale. The place offers all the usual steak house offerings presented to you on a hand-painted wooden bottle menu. That includes a teriyaki ribeye, filet mignon, Angus New York strip, and a Hawaiian-style chicken breast that's out of this world tender and juicy. And the burgers aren't just ground chuck, although the name might have you guess otherwise. Nope, we're talking ground prime sirloin. It's also one of the last remaining restaurants to offer a solid salad bar with house-made dressings and flavorful toppings like raisins and brown bread croutons. Get there early for the "snowbird" early-bird special, available nightly from 4 to 6 p.m. May through October (and Sunday through Thursday from November through April).Read more.

  • City Pub

956 S. Federal Highway Deerfield Beach

    954-427-8213

In the back of a strip mall on Federal Highway in Deerfield Beach is the City Pub, an enormous bar in which to catch some live music or take in some interesting conversations with the locals. The dimly lit bar is smoky and filled with an older crowd sipping scotch and whiskey. An enormous bar fills up the center of the room, and a cozy stage takes up a corner opposite a large wooden dance floor surrounded by booths. Although simple in décor, the bar gets its character from the patrons and folks behind the bar. The laid-back City Pub may not be a destination point for most, but it sure is a "just one more drink before we go" kind of place.

  • Fabio the Venetian Wine Bar & Restaurant

3471 N. Federal Highway Oakland Park

    954-990-5435

La Cucina Veneziana is owner Fabio Cracco's small piece of Venice in South Florida. The nondescript 35-seat cafe looks like a place to grab a quick salad or sandwich, but inside, Cracco is turning out bold Northern Italian cuisine, inspired by his family and the food he grew up eating. The 40-ish chef, who originally came to Florida to cook on private yachts, not only coaxes basic ingredients into a variety of bold, satisfying plates but does so with a gusto that's uncommon in South Florida. He's the chef but also the lead server, and he explains the menu and the day's specials to each table. He'll cook basic pasta carbonara or more complicated duck ragout, perfectly bronzed in its own fat. A refrigerated case displays an assortment of fine Italian salumis and berry-covered tarts dusted with powdered sugar. The lunch crowd, mostly men from nearby offices in button-up shirts and slacks, call him by name. At night, Fabio doles out kisses to old ladies as they leave the restaurant. He says he enjoys a small space where he can develop a reliable clientele for whom he will cook anything, so long as he has the ingredients. Read our full review.

  • Fernanda's International Market

3045 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale Wilton Manors

    954-563-2500

Fabulous Fernanda's isn't only the best gourmet market around; it also sells huge, deluxe sandwiches for lunch, the kind of serious fuel you need to keep you slogging through another six hours in the old cubicle. Muffelettos are made on homemade ciabatta bread, stuffed with many inches of paper-thin salami, ham, cappacola, and provolone, tarted up with a good swipe of olive salad. Or spring for a roast pork sandwich with "secret spices" and barbecue sauce. Or a Greek sub piled with turkey breast and roasted peppers. Then there's the Cuban sandwich, the Serrrano ham sub, and an olde English cheddar, ham, and pickle roll. Sandwiches are around $10 and big enough to feed two. A case of prepared foods offers empanadas, frittata, fried tortellini, prosciutto pasta salad, split pea soup, stuffed grape leaves, and marinated artichokes priced by the pound.

  • Grande Pizza

6006 SW 18th St. Boca Raton

    561-347-2344

Grande Pizza in Boca Raton -- from the same family that owns Esposito's Pizza in Davie and Lake Worth -- has been serving up a winning number with its signature Detroit-style pie. Truly unique, this square-cut and thick-crust pizza has the perfect combination of cheese, sauce, and crust. Baked up in the restaurant's coal-fired ovens, it comes out hot and steaming with just the right amount of dough and crunch. Also on the menu: about a dozen specialty pies "with personality" including the Four Seasons with artichoke, ham, mushroom, and onion to the Creamy Spinach with a special spinach cheese sauce and mozzarella.
  • Jack's Bar-B-Que Smokehouse

500 E. Oakland Park Blvd. Oakland Park

    954-567-9595

Jack Mays' barbecue sauce, a family recipe handed down from his father, lends a tangy zip to the meats -- as do the hickory and oak logs that they simmer over for hours. The fare here is consistently delectable, from supermoist spare ribs to catfish, pork, beef, and chicken and the best square of warm corn bread in town. Do not leave here without trying the boneless portion of pork that runs along the tops of spare ribs, called "rib tips" - sensational. Sweet homemade tea and peach cobbler round out what is sure to be a deliriously good meal.

  • Jalisco Mexican & Spanish Restaurant

700 N. Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale

    954-462-9695

Some locals cite the bars on the windows and the chipped-paint exterior of Jalisco as reasons they put off stopping in, but once they walk inside, everything changes. The warm yellow of the walls makes a comfy setting. Regulars slide into well-worn booths while loners take their seats at the bar. Mexican soft drinks and desserts are displayed in a colorful and enticing lineup near the door, and the waitstaff greets you with house chicken and rice soup and warm chips and salsa before you even sit down. The colorful and whimsical menu is loaded with mainly Mexican staples like chile rellenos and chimichangas, but some have a creative Mexo-American twist -- like a Mexican tuna melt and El Paso pizza. Daily specials can be had for $5. Whatever you get, top it off with flan.

  • Meal in a Pie

4440 NE 20th Ave., Fort Lauderdale Beaches

    954-202-9118

What has four corners, is filled with meat, and can travel anywhere you go? Why, a South African meat pie, of course. These feature flaky/light pastries with meaty fillings like spinach and feta, bobotie (that's curried beef with dried fruit), or lamb and potato. At only $4.95 a pop, they're inexpensive, single-serving meals -- not to mention quick and portable. They hail from the eponymous Meal in a Pie, a South African shop that also sells imported drinks and sundries. Bobotie (sweet ground beef) and chicken curry pies taste fresh; sausage rolls are like breakfast sausage with the same pastry crust. Wash them down with a Sparletta Creme Soda and grab a bottle of piri-piri sauce for the road.

  • Mind Your Manors

    2045 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors

    754-223-2172

If your mother ever told you to "mind your manners" when you were younger, it might bring back some interesting memories. Maybe you recall getting chastised for eating too fast, chewing with your mouth open, or belching at the table. Certainly, all things your adult self would never dream of doing. You'll be reminded of these things when you arrive at Mind Your Manors, a friendly gastropub in the heart of downtown Wilton Manors. Not because the name is a play on the familiar expression, but rather because it will be tempting to inhale everything in site, and you could be guilty of wiping up the last of what's left on the plate with your fingers. Owner Bobby Del Campo, a former bartender at Fort Lauderdale's Ritz-Carlton, decided to take a full-blown leap into the industry by opening his own establishment, crafting a menu that delivers what he calls hand-held comfort food, paired with a decent-sized offering of craft beers, and wine. True to Del Campo's vision, the menu screams American comfort food, arranged into lists for appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and salads. Each dish offers a different way to do things, like hummus made with black beans instead of garbanzo, and bruschetta with creative takes like smoked salmon, capers, and lemon feta dressing.Read our full review.

  • Mrs. Smokeys

    1970 Sawgrass Mills Circle Plantation

    954-846-0550

It's just as the name implies: The ribs and chicken are smoked first, then barbecued with sweet, tangy, homemade sauce. Baby-back ribs are especially succulent. Even the barbecued beans and roasted corn in the husk are smokin' good. The restaurant is self-serve, seat-yourself, and the casual nature of the place is complemented by an artistically rendered, Western-style dining room. A great place to linger with a slice of house-baked pecan or key lime pie for dessert. Outdoor seating.

  • Nacho Bizness

    Mobile food truck Fort Lauderdale

    954-305-1758

When was the last time you ate a taco that made you curse because it was so good? Try the spicy Korean pulled-pork concoction at Nacho Bizness, a mobile food truck generally located in Southwest Fort Lauderdale. Chilled cucumber, spicy sour cream, and sweet chili sauce atop a righteous helping of juicy, seasoned pork is everything a taco lover has always wanted without ever knowing it was possible. Asian fusion is far from passé when you fuse it inside a fresh corn tortilla. Don't bring anyone along who isn't prepared to hear you outwardly express how fucking amazing it is.
