  • Amore's Gourmet Pizza

    8906 W State Rd 84 Davie

    954-475-8877

The selection of steaming hot pies made to order is just one of the pluses at this pizza joint. You have many gourmet pizzas to choose from; sizes start at a filling medium and get up to an uneatably big extra-large. Try the Greek pizza, made with feta cheese, spinach, olives, and red onions. And like any proper pizza place, Amore's serves pasta dishes, deli sandwiches, and a variety of salads.
  • Angelo Elia Pizza Bar Tapas

    16950 Jog Rd. Delray Beach

    561-381-0037

This restaurant in a former home is cozy and warm, and you can't go wrong with pretty much any order. Expect richness and decadence from menu items including veal bone marrow served with pane casareccio, homemade bucatini with wild boar ragout or carbonara.

Finding good pizza outside of New York is a tall order -- particular in South Florida, where many picky former Northeasterners make their home. But Annie's Pizza and Subs in Margate makes the cut. Their pies have all the necessary ingredients: copious quantities of cheese, plenty of grease, just the right amount of sauce. They also cook up the all-important garlic rolls, fried calamari, chicken wings, calzones, strombolis, manicotti, hot and cold subs and every other Italian stand-by you could possibly desire. So stop whining about missing New York food and give Annie's a go.

  • Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza

2203 S. Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale

    954-462-5555

Anthony's has the best pizza this side of Italy - the blackened, bubbly crust is so authentic, you can taste ancient culinary history in it. That's thanks to a coal-fired brick oven that not only cooks outstanding pies topped with everything from cauliflower and arugula salad to breaded eggplant but also roasts chicken wings, beef for focaccia sandwiches, and calzones.

We'd argue that Anthony's has the best pizza this side of Italy - the blackened, bubbly crust is so authentic, you can taste ancient culinary history in it. That's thanks to a coal-fired brick oven that not only cooks outstanding pies topped with everything from broccoli rabe and arugula salad to breaded eggplant but also roasts beef for focaccia sandwiches, chicken wings, and calzones. And Anthony's has been successful enough to prove us right: They've opened so many new locations in the past couple of years that there's practically an Anthony's on every corner, with zero decline in quality. The menu is rounded out with a simple but fresh house salad, large enough for two, and a slice of New York-style cheesecake, also large enough for two.

  • At's-A-Pizza

1509 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-522-2935

This tiny but busy Las Olas eatery offers multiple options: Pastas, salads, sandwiches, desserts. But we love their pies. A bonus: your celiac friends can eat here, too, as At's-A-Pizza provides a tasty and remarkably chewy alternative to wheat crusts -- a rice flour crust. For the same price as a gluten-based pie, the wheat-averse can enjoy a pizza crust that has ne'er a hint of the metallic flavor that plagues so many products for the celiac-afflicted. Itâ??s all about options.

  • Capone's Flicker Lite Pizza and Raw Bar

    1014 N. Ocean Dr. Hollywood

    954-922-4232

This funky hole-in-the-wall on the Intracoastal Waterway plays second fiddle to its funkier next door neighbor, world-famous hamburger joint Le Tub. Flicker Lite survives on an old neon sign, word-of-mouth, an emphasis on sports, and proximity to its famous friend. Flicker Lite's ATM has saved many Le Tub newbies from washing dishes since it's cash-only over there.(Added bonus: Le Tub serves its delicious food until 4 a.m.) Le Tub may be weirdly rustic, but Flicker Lite is old and wise, with no-frills outdoor seating on the docks, mostly for smokers' benefit. Fans -- especially longtime local families, or the late-late-night In-the-Biz crowd -- swear by the chewy, delicious Chicago-style pizza, but they make a great NYC thin-crust here, too. The rest is typical Florida fare, fried grouper sandwiches and the like, plus subs. The tap and bottled beer selection is more than respectable. A hidden gem. The bar space morphs into a series of odd juxtapositions combining old-timey knickknacks: a fire alarm, a police call box, Chicago street signs, newspaper bins. There are also basketball video games and, at every table, miniature flat-screen TVs. Yes, sports lover, there are flat screens at every table, just in case you don't feel like watching the game on the bigger screens around the top perimeter of the room.

  • Esposito's Pizza Restaurant

    2221 S. University Dr. Davie/West Hollywood

    954-916-5667

Proprietor Lynne Esposito, a veteran pizzeria owner from Long Island, bakes a "diet pizza," at this Davie spot, which is made with low-fat cheeses and a whole-wheat crust (for the natural-foods sticklers among us). Of course, purists can feast on regular ol' New York-style pizza, not to mention calzones and other Italian entrées. They just won't look as good in their bathing suits.

  • Giorgio's Brick Oven Pizza

1499 SE 17th St. Fort Lauderdale

    954-767-8300

There's a world of difference between dull, ordinary table bread and the ethereal bodies of wheat born from Giorgio's time-tested brick oven. Hold it up to your nose and you'll immediately sense the difference: there's the sweet, heady fragrance of fresh dough, a yeasty pungency that puts the swirl of great food memories in motion. That bread will arrive at your table with little ramekins of spicy hummus, though a pat of sweet cream butter is just about the perfect compliment. It will also come split in two and stuffed with prosciutto, mozzarella, and tomato; with grilled chicken breast and roasted peppers and gobs of homemade chicken salad laced with chunks of celery. Aside from those stellar sandwiches, Giorgio's oven also produces lovely pizza dotted with crusty bubbles and Old World dishes like yellowtail snapper livornese cooked in a drape of wood smoke. And then there's the crunch of a perfect veal Milanese - an art Giorgio's has perfected - pasta dishes that go for days, Maryland crab cakes, seafood salad, and rotating lunch specials that pack the parking lot to capacity. But perhaps our waitress said it best on a recent visit: "I've worked here over 15 years, and I still love the bread."

  • Giovanni's Coal Fire Pizza

7625 N. State Road 7, Pompano Beach Coconut Creek

    954-345-9282

Giovanni's cooks its pies in one of three coal ovens, taking rounds of dough to extreme temperatures and submitting them to the kind of heat that persuades crusts to form delicious blackened air bubbles and to develop strips of charring on the bottom. A large pie will run you $13.95; toppings cost $1.95 each, and a half bottle of Chianti Ruffino is $13 from a big list of California and Italian bottles. The pizza's excellent: a simple, tangy marinara and part-skim mozzarella topped, say, with juicy sautéed mushrooms and thin slices of salty pepperoni curling hotly around the edges. Ratio of crust to topping: excellent. They also offer a Sunday dinner, a feast of baked ziti, salad, and dessert priced at $29.95 for four people.

  • Gran Forno Pronto

704 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-533-6276

Down the street from the lauded Gran Forno bakery resides its sit-down sibling, Gran Forno Pronto, an old-fashioned-looking Italian shop with wainscoted walls, black-and-white-tiled floors, and a cast of characters. Tourists and locals drink espresso and Menabrea on a sprawling patio dotted with umbrellas. A busy, graceful pizzaiolo mans a brick oven. A handful of new-in-town Italians works the floor. The people, the menu, the setting, and the price point hit a sweet spot for lunch in particular. Behind the counter sits a beautiful crusty loaf several feet long, stacked with Italian meats, provolone, and arugula. Cakes posed on old-fashioned dishes align the counter. It's tough to order wrong here, especially when it comes to pizza and bread, though a favorite is the meatballs. Milk and bread crumbs from the area's most heavenly bakery ensure that they're light and nearly pillowy. Doused with red sauce and a healthy heap of Parmesan, they're among the most delicious in town.

  • Humpy's Pizza & Panini

    2244 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors

    954-566-2722

Finally, a pizza parlor for the Wilton crowd! Humpy's, like many other Wilton establishments, makes use of double-entendres to draw in the punters but keeps them there with a casual, "our-place" feel and solid pizzas and paninis cooked to order. Their dough is crisp, fresh, and wheaty and crunches nicely when folded or eaten in its thin, flat state. Toppings are varied; you can choose from turkey sausage, caramelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, and about two dozen others, or you can opt for the pre-arranged favorites like wild mushroom with mozzarella, onions, and a dash of truffle oil. Pies come in 14- and 19-inch versions, and individual slices are available at the counter in the $3 range. Paninis include the meatball hero with marinara sauce and mozzarella, pesto chicken with provolone, tomato, and rosemary focaccia, and a veggie melt with spinach, mushrooms, peppers, and onions. Best of all, Humpy's is open late - so club-hopping party boys can pop in before 2 a.m. on the weekends and nosh in good company.

  • Johnny's New York Pizza

3701 N. Andrews Ave. Oakland Park

    954-537-7772

Sometimes you just need a piece of pizza. Not a deep-dish Sicilian or something coal-fired with broccoli rabe. Just a good, old-fashioned, thin-crust, New York-style slice. In such times of need, there's Johnny's, where $2.65 gets you a plain wedge of heaven and 50 cents more sweetens the deal with toppings like salami, pineapple, jalapeños, or (regular, thank God) broccoli. Johnny's is generous with the cheese, and when you order a Dr. Brown's root beer or a Heineken to wash the goodness down, they bring it to your table with a frosted mug - a plastic one, thank you very much.

  • La Fontana Pizzeria

2890 N. University Dr. Coral Springs

    954-575-5502

This cozy pizzeria by brothers Spartak and Tony Tare of Ferrara, Italy, feels like it came fresh off the boat. The pizza is thin, crisp, and creative, with quality toppings placed in classic Italian "less is more" format. Salumi of all types like juniper-cured speck top the pies, alongside artisanal cheeses and a slick of crushed tomatoes. Spinach ravioli and goat cheese- and pesto-studded focaccia are made on premises. More trattoria than simple pizza joint, the low prices and courtyard ambiance conspire to make La Fontana a great destination for the couples and families who congregate to sip Italian wine beside the cascading fountain.

  • Louie Bossi's Ristorante, Bar & Pizzeria

1032 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-356-6699

Since it's July 2015 opening, the scene at Louie Bossi's Ristorante Bar and Pizzeria in Fort Lauderdale is fueled by intense energy. On any given evening, every inch of the main dining room is jammed like the Dolphin Expressway at rush hour. Except here, people seem perfectly agreeable with being elbow to elbow. From a large table of elderly patrons picking over a few pizza pies, to the couple at the 15-seat salumi bar sharing slabs of cured meat and a bottle of wine, and the rowdy group at the corner booth in back putting back cocktails and sharing a trilevel, tiered platter of appetizers, the commotion never seems to stop. Lisabet Summa, Big Time's director of culinary operations, and former Big City Tavern phenom chef Louie Bossi are the dynamic duo behind this custom-curated operation. Years in the making, the sprawling custom design complete with an outdoor garden that is more piazza than patio, allowing for quasi-alfresco dining beneath a retractable opaque glass roof, tables, and lounge-style seating propped atop a faux grass lawn. The hype, however, is over the food, a menu of biblical proportions, with everything from homemade pasta and wood-grilled, dry-aged steaks to Neopolitan-style pizza and house-cured meats. As a result, the flavors at Louie Bossi's can be so assertive, just one meatball, just one bite of pasta, or just one slice of pizza can be enough to experience every ingredient. That includes bowls of hand-shaped pasta, such as the hearty mafaldine, scallop-edged shoelace lengths as thick as octopus tentacles smothered in a tangy ragu sauce made with 'nduja, a spreadable spicy pork sausage. But it's the pizza — baked for 90 seconds in a 900-degree wood-burning oven — that takes center stage, a wet sourdough bakes up thin and chewy, blistered black in spots and delivering a strong smoky essence that can be overpowering or just right, depending on your taste.
