  • Royal Treatz

7855 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines Hollywood

    954-986-2424

These days, you'd better be pretty impressive to earn a nod as a cupcake shop. After all, they're a dime a dozen. But at Royal Treatz, they're absolutely worth the attention. In addition to incredibly creative (and mouthwatering) cupcake creations, they also make chocolates, cookies, candies, pops and specialty cakes and froyo. Basically, a one-stop shop for all things sweet and magically delicious. Did we mention they make penis cupcakes on special order? They do. Plus the Muppets, tiger stripes, Mardi Gras-inspired designs and everything else you could think of.

  • 84 Diner

    11432 W. SR-84 Fort Lauderdale

    954-423-1787

This behemoth of a diner is a South Florida staple, with a menu nearly as expansive as the multiple dining rooms. At 84 Diner, in Davie, breakfast is served all day long -- as it should be -- with three-egg omelets, biscuits and gravy, and Mickey Mouse pancakes at the ready no matter the hour. But eggs and batter aren't the only ways to throw your cholesterol out of whack; there are also meaty dishes like the Hawaiian ham steak, or carby treats like the baked lasagna, as well as Coney classics like hot dogs and Greek dishes.

  • Bake Shack

238 S Federal Highway Dania Beach

    754-217-4235

This cozy neighborhood breakfast and lunch spot is just what Broward locals need. Customers are greeted by an eye-catching display of doughnuts in flavors such as blackberry blintz, tres leches, and Nutella mousse. But regulars come for the Dough Boy, a delectable combo of salty and sweet made with a mini cheese egg omelet and bacon, sausage, or ham nestled inside a delicate doughnut bread.
  • Boston Bagel Cafe

964 NE 62nd St. Oakland Park

    954-771-7221

"Ah, now that's a bagel! It's just like New York!" Why is it that every favorable bagel review, whether from a food critic or just the chump next door, has to reference New York? It's always Manhattan this,Brooklyn that. Try peddling that line at the Boston Bagel Café. Sure, the name says New England, but the café is pure Fort Lauderdale, locally owned and operated; there's actually not an original location in Boston. The bistro has no shortage of bagel flavors -- 21 in total, from the standards (poppy seed, pumpernickel, onion) to the more gourmet varieties (spinach quiche, jalapeno cheddar, wild berry). Of course, plain bagels are no fun -- not when cream cheese comes in flavors like honey walnut raisin and Dutch apple cinnamon. Either way, if your order's more than seven bucks, there's free delivery. Just think, you could have your newspaper and breakfast delivered to your door. Maybe then you'll stop thinking of Boston as Beantown.

  • Chocolada Bakery & Cafe

    1923 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood

    954-920-6400

If you're a resident of Hollywood, a last-minute trek to Chocolada has no doubt saved your ass from showing up to a loved one's birthday party empty-handed. What's best is that the desserts at this quaint European-style café are made so lovingly that that said loved one will think you plotted this gift selection weeks in advance. Besides the Penguin-shaped sponge cakes, raspberry mousse, and layered black and white cakes, customers flock to this spot for live music seven days a week, reasonable lunch specials, and coffee.

  • Croissan-Time French Bakery

1201 N. Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale

    954-565-8555

Paris is far away and expensive, but its reasonably priced, delicious flavor is right around the corner at Croissan-Time in Fort Lauderdale. You can't beat a breakfast composed of Bernard Casse's sublime croissants, hot from the oven. He's got chocolate or almond paste-filled varieties, sure, but check out those buttery crescents stuffed with sour apricots and custard, tart raspberries, silky prunes, walnuts, apples, strawberries, cinnamon, ham and cheese, or guava. Hang for a couple of hours with a cup of café au lait and you won't even notice when it's time for lunch. The deli features a selection of charcuterie including mergez and boudin noir; paté; game meats like pheasant and partridge; freshly cut cheeses; and, for dessert, homemade ice creams, fresh fruit pies, and cream puffs. Ooh la la!

  • Doris Italian Market & Bakery

    2077 University Dr. Coral Springs

    954-346-7774

Grocery stores around South Florida are pretty boring. You have your Winn-Dixie, your Publix, the occasional Albertson's, and a handful of independents. And that's about it. Seems as if there should be more competition in a region with five million hungry souls. Thank God for Doris's places. These stores, which are located in Hollywood, Sunrise, Plantation, Coral Springs, and Boca Raton, pack a lot of great food into little spaces. Each deli is a delight to behold; it features trays of lasagna, sausages, subs, calzones, and other Mediterranean dishes. A seafood counter offers fresh fish daily (we can personally recommend the tuna steaks), and a bakery turns out huge, soft loaves of bread for less than a buck each, not to mention a cornucopia of desserts. If you're looking for hot dogs, potato chips, and beer, hit the mainstream stores. If it's a touch of ethnicity and epicurean style you seek, visit Doris.

  • Edelweiss Bakery

2909 E. Commercial Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-772-1529

When you're craving a pork schnitzel or strudel, where do you go? If you like authentic German and live in South Florida, the answer is probably Edelweiss Bakery off Commercial Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Equal parts bakery and deli, here you can find everything from pastries, cakes, and cookies to fresh-sliced smoked turkey, jagdwurst, and a kasseler-style liver pate, this establishment might quickly become your go-to for a handsome helping of German Gemächlichkeit. Chef-owner and master baker Wilfried Kohler and his staff are said to work all through the night to offer patrons the varied array of fresh-baked goodies displayed in a long glass case each morning since the place was established in Walk through the lace curtain-covered front door and you'll take in the aromas of beautiful brown breads, fruit-filled strudels, giant pretzels, and a near perfect German Black Forest Cake. It may come as no surprise that Kohler, a native of the Black Forest region of Germany, is best known for baking up the region's best offerings; the chef learned to cook in Germany, working as a pastry chef for Marriott. If you go, grab a seat in the cafe that adjoins the bakery and be sure to order a loaf of the dark cracked rye bread, a slice of rhubarb cheesecake, a pork schnitzel sandwich, some frikadeller dumpling meatballs, and a few slices of German cheese known as harzer case.

  • Eten Food Co.

1404 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-383-4460

Eten Food Co. is hoping to fill the cheap lunch hole on Las Olas with takeout-only soups, sandwiches, and prepared foods. It's a skinny yet trendy-looking space, with racks of wine on one wall and a glass-encased deli counter on the other. The menu is small, just soups and sandwiches, which each cost about $8. The house-roasted turkey sandwich is reminiscent of something you put together the day after Thanksgiving, with Swiss, greens, tomato, mustard mayo, and whole-grain bread. The best deal is the $7.50 to $9 lunch box that comes with a cup of soup or salad and a half sandwich. They also drop something sweet into each of the boxes. Those treats may be the best option, including a gooey chocolate truffle and a soft biscotti dipped in chocolate.

  • EuroBread & Cafe

    1000 Seminole Dr. Fort Lauderdale

    954-568-3876

Lisa Amaral and her husband, pastry chef Christain Cabanettes, moved to Fort Lauderdale ten years ago and built EuroBread & Cafe from the ground up, hoping they could eventually create franchises. The duo sold the joint in 2004 only to return and take back the reins in June 2010. Christian Cabanettes, trained throughout France, brings to Broward amazingly fluffy, sweet little pasteries that will make you want to say, "Oui!" Located around the corner from the Intracoastal Waterway and the Sunrise Bridge, this Provencal-inspired cafe is known to draw a French-speaking crowd for coffee, quiche lorraine, croque monsieur and mille feuille for dessert. EuroBread & Cafe also sells imported gourmet goodies, so you can bring home a treat to your sweetie.

  • German Bread Haus

311 E. Commercial Blvd. Oakland Park

    954-491-4464

Willkommen to the German Bread Haus, an authentic German bakery and retail store built in an over-the-top cute theme. The structure looks like a gingerbread house oddly located on a nondescript block on Commercial Boulevard. The inspiration behind the Haus came from owner Dieter Dauer. Before he left Germany, Dauer used to tell his two kids at bedtime the story of Hansel and Gretel, so the Haus represents this magical experience he shared with his children. Dauer and his wife, Norma, have owned and operated the bakery since 1986. They bake German favorites like Bavaria Farmer Rye, Dresdner stollen, and apple strudel. There's also a back house that was converted into a certified organic facility, where the healthier breads are made with what the owners refer to as "Flour Power."

  • Grampa's Bakery and Restaurant

17 SW First St., Dania Beach Hollywood

    954-923-2163

This sprawling, immensely likable restaurant-bakery has a fetching old-timey family-restaurant feel and has been pleasing customers for so many years that if your grandparents lived in Dania Beach, they'd tell you what it was like to eat here as little kids. Nothing radical about the menu at Grampa's -- home-cooked food that tastes good and fills you up. Roast chicken, meat loaf, pastas, burgers, steaks, salads -- it's a big selection of American favorites that hit the spot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Don't pass up desserts, as the bakery portion of the restaurant puts out some good pastries.

  • Gran Forno Bakery

1235 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-467-2244

To find Gran Forno, you could look for the storefront window that displays bakers at work or you could simply close your eyes (mind your step) and follow your nose. The smell of bread, savory with rosemary, wafts to the street. On weekends, Gran Forno is crowded and clubby. Regulars gather in tennis togs to consult maps for their upcoming trip to Tuscany while the owners chime in with advice. Not surprisingly the focaccia, pastries, and biscotti are all excellent, but the best thing about this authentic, family-owned bakery is the way it continually pulls off the unexpected. At Thanksgiving, for example, Gran Forno's beautiful pumpkin pies no doubt upstage many a turkey. And this being Florida, the bakery also makes a key lime tartlet that, while generous, might still be a tad too small (and too delicious) to share.

  • Manny's Cafe and Bakery

10281 W. Sample Rd. Coral Springs

    954-346-8666

All hail the empanada, that self-contained food stuff so popular in Latin cafes, bodegas, convenience stores, and bakeries. Every country has its own interpretation of the pocket-sized meals: Colombia offers a crisp, fried corn shell stuffed with rice and chicken or beef and potatoes. Argentinian empanadas - like the kind produced daily at Manny's Bakery - are like little gaucho pies filled with chunked chicken or spinach with cheese. This West Broward bakery is frequented by Latino families, especially around lunchtime. That's when it makes South American-style "butifarra" sandwiches from the crusty, flaky bread it bakes, along with big tamales wrapped in banana leaves. You can get a big sandwich and a drink for under $8. The empanadas, though, are hard to pass up. Under $2 a pop, these pies sport a crust that's sweet, buttery, and dense, with a dusting of flour on the bottom and a glossy egg-wash glaze on top. Manny's gives these an Argentine twist by cubing white-meat chicken and bathing it in guiso, a tomato-heavy sauce flecked with cilantro. Manny's is planning to move soon (the new location yet unknown, but the owners plan to stay in Coral Springs). Be sure to visit before they make the haul.

  • Master Cake Bakery

9924 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines Hollywood

    954-842-4819

By now, we're sure you've heard enough of us extolling the many virtues of the Pembroke Pines Master Cake Bakery owned by European-trained, Israeli-born pastry chef and second generation baker Mickey Grunberger, who opened the kosher bakery in 2013. The "cronut-like" doughnuts, or “dossants” as Grunberger likes to call them, are made from scratch daily using traditional French and Hungarian baking techniques. Although you won't find any other type of traditional American fried dough here, you can browse the bakery's display cases filled with fresh pastries, custom cakes, challah bread, danishes, rugelach -- and, yes, croissants.

    954-983-6631

Oh Mojo Donuts, whatever did we do without you? We were resigned to the tired, assembly-line style donuts of a Dunkin or a Krispy Kreme. But the doughy creations at this small sweet shop in Pembroke Pines introduced us to the wonderful world of maple bacon, Fruity Pebble and peanut butter deliciousness (not all at once, of course). Folks line up for the wild creations at this divine donut emporium. And they've got the usual suspects, too - Boston Kreme, apple fritters, basic glazed. All fresh from the oven and Homer Simpson-worthy.

  • Nirala Sweets BBQ

8913 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Sunrise Plantation

    954-578-9060

In 2004, this small Indian storefront sweet shop expanded into the Texas-themed room next door from a forgotten barbecue joint. The deeply strange space now offers the usual weekday Indian lunch buffet alongside the less usual, like kebabs, paya (gelatinous cow foot), and a weekend brunch of halwa puri -- flatbread served with a thick, sweet farina spread and hot, sour pickles. But Nirala truly shines with its namesake sweets. It's the sole American outpost of 58 stores worldwide, and four generations of the Shabbir family make, among other things, their exemplary jalebi, deep-fried spirals of syrup best experienced fresh with still-liquid centers. Or try the kalakand, a concoction of cheese curds, pistachios, sugar, butter, and cardamom. Heavenly.
