  • Edelweiss Bakery

2909 E. Commercial Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-772-1529

When you're craving a pork schnitzel or strudel, where do you go? If you like authentic German and live in South Florida, the answer is probably Edelweiss Bakery off Commercial Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Equal parts bakery and deli, here you can find everything from pastries, cakes, and cookies to fresh-sliced smoked turkey, jagdwurst, and a kasseler-style liver pate, this establishment might quickly become your go-to for a handsome helping of German Gemächlichkeit. Chef-owner and master baker Wilfried Kohler and his staff are said to work all through the night to offer patrons the varied array of fresh-baked goodies displayed in a long glass case each morning since the place was established in Walk through the lace curtain-covered front door and you'll take in the aromas of beautiful brown breads, fruit-filled strudels, giant pretzels, and a near perfect German Black Forest Cake. It may come as no surprise that Kohler, a native of the Black Forest region of Germany, is best known for baking up the region's best offerings; the chef learned to cook in Germany, working as a pastry chef for Marriott. If you go, grab a seat in the cafe that adjoins the bakery and be sure to order a loaf of the dark cracked rye bread, a slice of rhubarb cheesecake, a pork schnitzel sandwich, some frikadeller dumpling meatballs, and a few slices of German cheese known as harzer case.

  • Hollywood Grill

    905 N. Broadwalk Hollywood

    954-272-2525

The food of Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan is the adopted food of cookouts, vacations, and a wine- and garlic-fueled night throughout much of the former Soviet Union, so anyone who's been to the Black Sea (or Brighton Beach) will feel at home at this modest outdoor café on the Broadwalk. Kebabs are at their best on a bit of Armenian flatbread, dressed with onion and tangy tkemali sauce. Their versions of kharcho, a spicy, exotically herbed lamb-and-rice soup, and lobio, a refreshing bean salad, are especially good, though khash, an austere soup of pork skin and bones, is an acquired taste at best. The menu lends itself to sharing and exploring the unusual flavors of the Caucasus, all without changing out of your flip-flops and bathing suit.

  • Josef's

    9763 W. Broward Blvd. Plantation

    954-473-0000

This funky/elegant Plantation restaurant specializes in the Northern Italian fare of the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region; it's run by an Austrian chef and his American wife. This region of Italy was dominated by the Austrian Hapsburgs for years, and its cuisine incorporates Greek and Turkish elements as well. Shrimp casserole is laced with grappa and Edam; homemade spaetzle is tossed with speck, sage, and caramelized onions. A generous pounded and butterflied veal chop coated with bread crumbs, egg, and Parmesan and served with a simple, perfectly dressed green salad is simply one of the best veal dishes we have ever tasted. The menu changes seasonally. Splendid desserts include a puff-of-air apple strudel. A gift of the house, chocolate-covered strawberries end every meal here. One of the finest restaurants in Broward County.

  • Le Patio

2401 NE 11th Ave. Wilton Manors

    954-530-4641

Le Patio, a place that bills itself as the "tiniest, cutest restaurant in South Florida," just might be telling the truth. The inside is no larger than a hallway, with a miniature kitchen to match. Owners Veronique Leroux and Jean Doherty do their cooking off site in the mornings and afternoons and truck the goods into the store to sell for lunch and dinner. The food ranges from comforting, hearty French fare like boeuf bourguignon to simple dishes like goat cheese salad and a plate of patés. Even more comforting, though, is the outdoor patio, a beautiful, quaint space in the sun with mismatched tables and chairs made from old sewing machines and vintage tin French beer signs hanging on the wooden fence. Prices are very low, even for wines by the glass.

  • Transylvania Restaurant

    2009 Harrison St Hollywood

    954-929-0777

Admit it – you've wandered by Transylvania Restaurant in downtown Hollywood but were always too scared to venture in.. Don't be – this throwback to Eastern Europe's yesteryear is the stage for super-nice owner John Baleanu, who might even tell you his tale of absconding over the Romanian border to Yugoslavia and finally to the U.S. The restaurant, which opened in 1996, looks like a Spartan Elks Lodge but occasionally spices things up with an evening show of Romanian dancers, who even show a little skin. Though the restaurant serves lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, go Sundays for campy Romanian music and an all-you-can-eat buffet, which includes caviar, eggplant, mixed vegetable spread, polenta, stuffed mushrooms, and other delights from pickles to pork. It doesn't have to be Halloween time – all year ’round, it serves goulish offal offerings such as tripe soup, chicken livers, and veal brains.
