  • Boston Bagel Cafe

964 NE 62nd St. Oakland Park

    954-771-7221

"Ah, now that's a bagel! It's just like New York!" Why is it that every favorable bagel review, whether from a food critic or just the chump next door, has to reference New York? It's always Manhattan this,Brooklyn that. Try peddling that line at the Boston Bagel Café. Sure, the name says New England, but the café is pure Fort Lauderdale, locally owned and operated; there's actually not an original location in Boston. The bistro has no shortage of bagel flavors -- 21 in total, from the standards (poppy seed, pumpernickel, onion) to the more gourmet varieties (spinach quiche, jalapeno cheddar, wild berry). Of course, plain bagels are no fun -- not when cream cheese comes in flavors like honey walnut raisin and Dutch apple cinnamon. Either way, if your order's more than seven bucks, there's free delivery. Just think, you could have your newspaper and breakfast delivered to your door. Maybe then you'll stop thinking of Boston as Beantown.

  • Cafeina

297 NW 23rd St., Miami Central Dade

    305-438-0792

One day, 23rd Street might resemble Ocean Drive, but for now, it's a dark street on a dark block on a dark side of town. This bar and lounge, the Wynwood Café District's first, is an oasis. The venue includes a spacious outdoor area with couches under glowstick-lit tree branches, a goth-like candlelit interior, an art gallery, and a kitchen helmed by chef Guily Booth, who makes a killer crab cake, according to Martha Stewart. Hoping to lure in pre-party groups, Cafeina offers an ample drink and tapas menu. Dishes come out in no particular order; they include items such as mini Kobe burgers, Moroccan quesadillas ($10), Chicken and chorizo burgers ($9), and mini Cuban sandwiches with lamb ($12). Service is friendly, but later hours are busy. Entertainment includes DJs. Valet parking is available.

  • 11th Street Annex

14 SW 11th St. Fort Lauderdale

    954-767-8306

A charming lunch spot tucked away in a former pastor’s home at Trinity Lutheran Church, the restaurant run by two sisters, Jonny Altobell and Penny Sanfilippo, has hidden in the annex for ten years. In a nod to childhood nicknames, the Ugly Sisters riff on their sense of humor that pervades the spirit of the place. A chalkboard lists the day’s five features, which include homemade soup, a rotation of sandwiches, and variations on mac and cheese. A plus for picky eaters: The sisters accommodate vegan and vegetarians as well as food allergies, so be sure to give a heads-up. And don’t hesitate to stop in for a fly-by coffee or tea and something for a sweet tooth.

  • Java Boys Coffee House

    2230 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors

    954-564-8828

Put simply, now that Starbuck's has invaded Wilton Manors (at Five Points, in the old Shakespeare's Pub location) those beholden to its corporate charms will go there. Folks supporting the little guy, however, will come to Java Boys in the gayest strip mall in the state. Put it this way: Anita Bryant has nothing to do with the Florida orange sunshine cake. Cheaper and way friendlier than a Starbucks, with free WiFi, and some well-worn tables where you can work, slurp, gawk, and

  • Kamzaman

1816 N. University Dr., Sunrise Plantation

    954-916-5646

To hunt for the perfect cup of coffee is to separate the men from the boys, the women from the girls, the NBA from your neighborhood pick-up game. There's a lot of crap out there. Mediocrity, really. But rest assured, at Kamzaman, there's no frou-frou soy, decaf double lattes. Instead, you'll taste the richest, smoothest Turkish coffee of your life for a ridiculously low price. The caffeine elixir is brought to your table in a piping hot vessel, which you then poor into tiny ceramic cups for you and your guests. And what goes as well with good coffee as tobacco? Luckily, Kamzaman is a spacious smoke shop in a strip mall north of Sunrise Boulevard that's become a hotbed of Middle Eastern shops. Its walls are a continuous mural of scenes of Saharan life.

  • Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

    2401N Federal Highway Wilton Manors

    954-565-5599

Few things inspire a greater reaction in Broward / Palm Beach sugar fiends than a lit-up "HOT NOW" sign glowing outside a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Founded in 1937 when Vernon Rudolph purchased a top-secret yeast-raised donut recipe from a New Orleans chef, the donut company set its sites on world domination in the 1990s and embarked upon a mass expansion. The company now boasts more than 700 locations in 21 countries including Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. It's best known for the "Original Glazed" donut, an ethereally light creation that seems to dissolve into sticky sweet thin air on the tongue. Most locations offer a drive-thru, making it all too easy to roll through for a hot dozen and then make a quick getaway. Krispy Kreme is easy to find on Voice Places.

  • Master Cake Bakery

9924 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines Hollywood

    954-842-4819

By now, we're sure you've heard enough of us extolling the many virtues of the Pembroke Pines Master Cake Bakery owned by European-trained, Israeli-born pastry chef and second generation baker Mickey Grunberger, who opened the kosher bakery in 2013. The "cronut-like" doughnuts, or “dossants” as Grunberger likes to call them, are made from scratch daily using traditional French and Hungarian baking techniques. Although you won't find any other type of traditional American fried dough here, you can browse the bakery's display cases filled with fresh pastries, custom cakes, challah bread, danishes, rugelach -- and, yes, croissants.

  • Purely Pressed

6314 N. Powerline Rd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-772-5000

Purely Pressed Juice Co. in Fort Lauderdale is a unique approach to the average juice bar. The way they make and sell their cold-pressed, bottled juices stems from supply and demand: They only make what they plan to sell each day, so juices are always super fresh. Co-owner Alan Potrzuski offers a short menu of vibrant-hued juices priced at $8 each. Popular concoctions include the Farmer's Basket (kale, spinach, cucumber, celery, lemon, and apple) and Summer Harvest (pineapple, orange, ginger, cucumber, strawberry, and chia seeds) or the occasional seasonal special rife with the freshest local produce available. Like many area juice bars, Purely Pressed also serves vegetable- and fruit-packed smoothies, locally roasted Calusa coffee, and organic vegetarian and vegan eats.Read our full review.

  • St. Bart's Coffee Company

441 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-832-9004

On the beachfront corner of SE 5 Street and A1A, just south of the touristy stretch of beach at Las Olas, lies St. Bart's Coffee Co.'s flagship quiet cafe. (There's another outpost a few blocks south.) St Bart's opened 17 years ago and draws a strong mix of locals and tourists dishing on hearty breakfasts and light cafe lunch options. The coffee is always fresh, and there are plenty of sidewalk tables, ocean view included, where you can eat, check your e-mail, and soak up the sun's rays, not to mention gaze at bikini-clad passersby and break for spontaneous dips in the Atlantic Ocean. Did we mention the view is amazing? It is. Keep an eye out for fire fighters; their fire house is around the corner from the cafe.

  • Starbucks

1015 NE 26th St. Wilton Manors

    954-566-1304

Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Ft. Lauderdale and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didnâ??t begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores.
