  • Char Hut

    9000 W. State Road 84 Davie

    954-474-9312

Any chain restaurant applying for an operating license in Florida ought to have to complete a course in the Char-Hut methodology. This little Florida franchise, which opened its first outlet in 1976 to sell char-grilled burgers, onion rings, and hot dogs, is doing so many things right that it’s easy to lose track. It serves nutritious food at low prices – a fresh-ground, lean burger that’s won approval from the American Heart Association; side orders of whole baked sweet or Idaho potatoes, black beans and rice, cole slaw, and plantains; salads topped with grilled tuna steak or chicken. Further, it locates its franchises in western communities and reaches out to its neighbors with specials – discounts for local teachers and faculty, free food for youngsters wearing uniforms on game days, Jr. burgers and hot dogs for every A a kid earns on her report card. It has stuff for vegetarians. Discounts for seniors. It's so squeaky-clean, it’s almost painful; the food is delicious. With every patty flipped over a hot grill, Char Hut sews up one small tear in fast food’s tattered reputation.

  • Charm City Burgers Company

1136 E. Hillsboro Blvd. Deerfield Beach

    954-531-0300

Charm City's motto is, "Five star chefs, five dollar burgers." And you'll get just that: gourmet-style burgers topped with so many quality ingredients that they're literally bursting open. The messy sandwiches do pose some serious questions, such as, how do you get your mouth around a six-inch-tall burger and keep dry? But finding the answer is part of the fun. A cowboy burger pairs sautéed onions and mushrooms with thick-cut bacon. The sides rock too: Hand-cut fries are seasoned perfectly, onion rings look as plump as fat donuts, and marinated grilled wings act like Texas barbecue in that the meat falls right off the bone. Wash it all down with a cold microbrew or a Blue Bell milkshake, and you'll forget about the messiness fast.

  • Jack's Old Fashion Hamburger House

4201 N. Federal Highway Oakland Park

    954-565-9960

This place, Jughead's idea of heaven, is so good that you'll overlook the missing ed after fashion in its name. The atmosphere is starker than Ellsworth Kelly's tomb. Sink your teeth into a half pound's worth of ground-fresh-daily-from-whole-briskets-of-USDA-inspected-beef burgers. Why not? They're individually pattied on the premises, grilled to order, and traditionally seasoned. Then they're stuck between buns large enough to soak up some of the drippings but small enough that you don't feel like you've put your mouth around Hawaii. Jack's offers no nostalgia besides what you'll find from the get-real menu, which is happily bereft of fad-burgers and silly dressings. This place offers homemade relishes and keeps the prices regular -- and stays focused on the beef (though a few sandwiches and hot dogs are offered).

  • Moe's Southwest Grill

    1830 Cordova Rd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-459-9940

If you threw a peso in any direction, chances are you'd hit a fast-food Tex-Mex establishment that has sprung up in the past few years. Since all of them have the same menu items, more or less, it's easy to figure out whose comida is bueno. Moe's emphasizes the fact that it doesn't use freezers or microwaves, but it's run by a big corporation, Focus Brands -- the same people who bring you Carvel and Cinnabon. Although much of what Moe's does is done better by a competitor (cough, Chipotle, cough), it'll do in a pinch -- think of it as the Subway of Mexican food. Try the John Coctostan (meat quesadillas) or Ruprict (vegetarian nachos).

  • Starbucks

1015 NE 26th St. Wilton Manors

    954-566-1304

Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Ft. Lauderdale and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didnâ??t begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores. • Tijuana Flats

1619 E. Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-463-3480

The walls at Tijuana Flats are covered with enough silly slogans and "xtreme" flair to base a whole other Mike Judge movie on. But the Tex-Mex ain't bad: burritos, quesadillas, and tacos filled with carefully grilled meats and fresh ingredients. Better yet is the fast-casual chain's hot sauce bar, a try-at-your-own-risk collection of chili pepper potions ranging from "girly man" to "holy shit" on the Scoville scale.
