If you can navigate the crush inside these tiny aisles — where cans of Italian tomatoes and olive oil from Sicily and red wine vinegar are balanced acrobat-style, ascending to the ceiling — and if you can get past the cheese counter — with its hundreds of pounds of brie and cheddar and asiago and huntsman and smoked gouda from France, Italy, Switzerland, Vermont, Spain, Denmark, and England — you'll still inevitably have to stop cold at the wall of parmesan. This is Parmegiano Reggiano, about 25 or 30 full-sized wheels of the stuff — arguably the most beautiful and delicious cheese the world has ever produced. The Boys Farmers' Market is like a permanent proposition, standing right there on Military Trail, that thou shalt never go hungry for all that thou most craves. Other delights include locally made honey, bitter chocolate, 26 kinds of flavored hors d'oeuvre spreads, slabs of grouper, piles of shrimp, 12 kinds of sardines.. Need we go on?

A charming lunch spot tucked away in a former pastor’s home at Trinity Lutheran Church, the restaurant run by two sisters, Jonny Altobell and Penny Sanfilippo, has hidden in the annex for ten years. In a nod to childhood nicknames, the Ugly Sisters riff on their sense of humor that pervades the spirit of the place. A chalkboard lists the day’s five features, which include homemade soup, a rotation of sandwiches, and variations on mac and cheese. A plus for picky eaters: The sisters accommodate vegan and vegetarians as well as food allergies, so be sure to give a heads-up. And don’t hesitate to stop in for a fly-by coffee or tea and something for a sweet tooth.

New River Groves is a five-acre citrus grove, a fudge factory, a mega-fruit stand, and a mecca for what many consider to be the best key lime pie around. Bob and Terry Roth opened the Davie stand in 1963, primarily as a means of selling their oranges and grapefruits. But that modest goal changed years ago when Terry started turning the groves' excess key limes into graham cracker-crusted, whipped cream-topped key lime pies. The pies were an immediate success, and nowadays the Roths sell 20,000 a year -- 2,500 on the day before Thanksgiving alone. Locals, tourists, and celebrities flock to New River for the creamy, slightly tart pies. The Roths also sell bottles of their own key lime juice and homemade key lime jelly, key lime taffy, and key lime fudge.

Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Ft. Lauderdale and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didnâ??t begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores.
