  • Gilbert's 17th Street Grill

    1821 Cordova Rd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-768-8990

Gilbert's, which sits in the corner of the harbor shops in Fort Lauderdale, is a clean, family-run restaurant, with an all-glass façade and plenty of bright-orange tables. It features a big list of nearly a dozen burgers, plus fish, chicken, and steak sandwiches, some grilled entrées, and a daily rotating cadre of lunch specials. The restaurant is partial service, so to order, you queue up along a counter that looks something like a cafeteria line, with big display cases, and order from the register. Ask for a burger -- voted among the best in South Florida by readers of the Sun-Sentinel -- and what you get is a half-pound, all-Angus beef patty grilled to a healthy char and cooked to your liking inside. There are several varieties, like their Cajun spice-rubbed burger with cheddar cheese or one with crumbled blue cheese stuffed inside the patty. Each is served on a tray lined with faux newspaper and finished off by crisp, greaseless fries. You'll pay as much as $15 after drink, tax, and tip, but for those looking for a thick, restaurant-style burger, Gilbert's is a welcome addition.

  • Grille 401

401 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-767-0222

The Rainmaker Group already operated Brimstone Woodfire Grill in Pembroke Pines and Piñon Grill in Boca Raton, and in 2012 opened Grille 401 on Las Olas Boulevard in the space where Rare steakhouse and before it, Bova Prime, used to live. Decor is contemporary and comfortable, with warm blue and slate walls, nicely textured wood floors and tabletops, and silky striped oversized booths with matching curtains. The fare is upscale comfort food such as the eight ounce Prime Burger served on a challah bun or herb roasted Bell and Evans "all-natural" chicken topped with cilantro key lime sauce and a side of shoestring fries. Seafood options include sushi, to cedar plank salmon and pecan crusted trout. A full bar with a large array of specialty cocktails is available. The restaurant draws the downtown corporate crowd, but unfortunately, its marketing claim that food is locally sourced could not be confirmed by managers when they were pressed for details.
