  • Cherry Smash

8000 Wiles Rd., Coral Springs Parkland

    954-346-0999

Gone are the days of Friday night dates at the ice cream parlor -- the kids these days are probably too busy getting into more nefarious business. However, here, you’ll still find a nostalgic ice cream parlor with vintage knickknacks and a checkerboard floor, at Cherry Smash, the eponymous sundae is not to be missed. Served in a golden goblet, this frozen dessert calls for the shop's signature Purple Haze ice cream, a blend of chocolate, cherry, and raspberry flavors. Hidden inside are chocolate-covered maraschino cherry candies that need to be unwrapped for consumption. Conglomerating in the mix are walnuts, black cherry sauce, and hot fudge.

  • Dairy Belle

312 E. Dania Beach Blvd., Dania Beach Hollywood

    954-920-3330

With its walk-up window and picnic tables, Dairy Belle would be welcome enough if it were only an old-fashioned ice cream and hot dog stand. But owners Gilles and Ritane Grenier and their daughter Isabelle also serve the dishes of their native land, Quebec. First, that means poutine ($5.83 to $7.32), a pile of French fries tossed with salty, mozzarella-like white cheese curds and smothered in hot gravy that melts everything together and makes it taste deceptively wholesome. Need your veggies? There's poutine italienne, with the same fries and curds covered in a homemade tomato sauce; and galvaude, a gravy-based version that adds shredded chicken and mushy peas, hitting all the major food groups. Another regional specialty is the guedille ($3.18), a loose mayo-based salad of chopped lettuce, tomato, and onion on a toasted hot dog bun, chicken, or chopped egg. Don't miss their homemade caramel topping, rich with cream. Cash only!

  • Jaxson's Ice Cream Parlor Restaurant

128 S. Federal Highway, Dania Beach Hollywood

    954-923-4445

Known for "the kitchen sink," the Holy Grail of sundaes in plumbing fixtures, this landmark of an ice cream parlor still makes its ice cream by hand, batch by slowly mixed batch. More than 60 flavors are available every day, and the scoops here are as big as oven mitts. Don't let that deter you from exploring the menu, though. The food items that come out of the Dania Beach "country kitchen" are all homemade and authentic, despite drawing from all regions of the culinary map: The Buffalo wings are zesty, barbecue beef is lean and tangy, the Rueben boasts tender corned beef on marbled rye bread, and even the clam roll has succulent, freshly battered shellfish tucked inside.

  • Kilwins Chocolates Fudge and Ice Cream

809 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-523-8338

It's only natural that a store that devotes nearly every fiber of its being to the veneration of the cocoa bean would excel at providing a rich, creamy cocktail that's a veritable chocolate explosion. The double-chocolate shake at Kilwin's on Las Olas bypasses the half-assed -- and some would say, incorrect -- method of using vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. Instead, the shake is the straight-up good stuff: chocolate ice cream blended with chocolate syrup. Pair that with amazing fudge, awesome chocolates, and a huge selection of ice cream, it's like putting a kid in a candy shop -- a gourmet candy shop.

  • Larry's Olde Fashioned Ice Cream & Yogurt

    749 University Dr. Coral Springs

    954-752-0497

Maybe it's because ice cream parlors are such ubiquitous fixtures on the American landscape, but for some reason, kitsch and gimmicks have become the rule rather than the exception. If you just want to get a couple of decent scoops on a sugar cone and enjoy it in peace, then pay a visit to Larry's Olde Fashioned Ice Cream & Yogurt in Coral Springs. This tiny spot will serve you ice cream in a normal, individual-sized container. The only work you'll have to do is to decide between colored or chocolate sprinkles. (Go crazy - have both.) And best of all, no one - repeat, absolutely no one - will break out into off-key song should you drop a dollar in the tip jar. It's like heaven. And if you find yourself going through gimmick withdrawal, order a sundae and spin the wheel to find out how much you'll pay. You might even get it for free.

  • Siciliano's Frozen Custard

    5917 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood

    954-985-8050

Is it healthy? No. Worth the calories? Yes. Sicilianoâ??s Frozen Custard in Hollywood has been around for ages. And thereâ??s a reason. It may not be the nicest neighborhood around. And no, you canâ??t serve yourself, but this little shack is home to some one-of-kind soft-serve ice cream and frozen yoghurt. While the shop always has chocolate and vanilla on hand, itâ??s the seasonal flavors that get many to repeatedly walk through their doors. Make sure to check out the pumpkin in autumn: the cold custard couldnâ??t be a better fit for the hot South Florida fall.

  • The Snow Factory

    1909 Cordova Rd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-284-6782

Awarded New Times 2013 "best" dessert, this Fort Lauderdale ice cream parlor and dessert shop is sweet-tooth overkill. What to order? The snow cones, made with fresh-shaved ice using old-fashioned, hand-operated, ice-cutting machines? Soft-serve frozen yogurt, offered in hundreds of flavors? Or handmade ice cream cookie sandwiches? The bestsellers at Florida Snow Factory are the shaved ice, with more than a dozen flavor combinations like strawberries and cream or Dreamsicle. Both begin with a layer of either regular or soft-serve vanilla ice cream at the bottom, topped with layers of fresh-shaved ice and finished with any of the Hawaiian syrups mixed fresh in-house. Customizable, made-to-order ice cream cakes allow customers to pick two of their favorite ice cream flavors and add endless toppings swirled into the mix. Cakes are topped with sprinkles for a delicious, take-home treat.
