  • 13 American Table

451 E. Palmetto Park Rd. Boca Raton

    561-409-2061

A newcomer in the Boca food scene in summer 2013, this place has brought a piece of South Florida's burgeoning foodie ethos to town. Owners Albert and Melanie Aletto opened the spot earlier this summer, and they brought in some heavy hitters from Delray Beach. Both chef Anthony Fiorini and general manager Oliver Tito have worked at highly respected Atlantic Boulevard hot-spot 32 East. Here you'll find a somewhat similar approach to cuisine with simple food prepared with the finest-quality ingredients that can be found. The new American-style fare incorporates international influence with dishes ranging from Josper-grilled octopus and family eggplant with burrata, crostini, and basil to Florida grouper ceviche and BBQ pork belly. When you look at it, what could be more American than that?

  • East City Grill

    1800 Bell Tower Lane Weston

    954-659-3339

Despite its name, East City Grill is nowhere close to the east side; it's located in Weston, emphasis on the west. This contemporary-designed establishment prepares American and international fare with a focus on Florida produce and fish when possible. And if local fish isn't available within reach, East City Grill has seafood flown in daily. (Now we're talking about flying fish!) The truffle-crusted sea scallops paired with peal pasta and haricot verts in a cream sauce will delight the palate. For those who prefer meat, there's a vast variety, from duck to pork to skirt steak. Zagat gave this joint the Best Martini in Broward County awards, and the wine list is stocked, making it a destination for tastings and special events.

  • Lips

1421 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Oakland Park Fort Lauderdale

    954-567-0987

You don't go to Fort Lauderdale's Lips to eat but to be eaten: The drag queens and divas who patrol the crowd have a sharp eye for a sweet little morsel like you to chew on, so wear your thickest skin. Dinner shows, with a full three-course menu, are at 8:15 or 8:30 Tuesday through Sunday and offer a different theme each night (Bitchy Bingo on Wednesdays); the popular Gospel Brunch on Sunday plays at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to a mix of straight couples, elderly tourists, bachelorette parties, and gay blades celebrating their birthdays. Continental entrées of steak, chicken, lamb chops, salads, and sandwiches don't rise far above average, but the show is a hoot and worth every penny. Sunday Brunch is the best bargain, with all-you-can-drink mimosas and bloodies.

  • Santo

501 S. Federal Highway Hallandale Beach

    305-532-2882

It's only fitting that a nightclub named Santo -- Spanish for saint -- shares its address with a multimillion-dollar casino. shares its address with a multimillion-dollar casino. Originally on South Beach's Lincoln Road, Santo relocated to Hallandale Beach's Gulfstream Park in the summer of 2010. Though the area's nightlife was seemingly nonexistent, this 4,000-square-foot, urban-chic lounge attracts an upscale South Florida crowd from Boca to Brickell. Located on the second floor of the casino complex, Santo offers full bar and bottle service. As is the case with most ultralounges, Santo isn't cheap -- $20 cover after midnight - but the people are beautiful and the staff is gracious, thus justifying the price of admission. The lounge gets busy after midnight, and it's not uncommon to see young lovers flirting and scantily clad women dancing atop the bar.
  • Vienna Cafe & Wine Bar

    9100 W. State Road 84 Davie

    954-423-1961

South Floridians don't get the chance to eat Austrian cuisine often, certainly not in Davie, and much less in a setting that resembles the cottage where the Big Bad Wolf found Grandma. That makes Vienna Café a destination for those craving "something different" -- an inclination that strikes without warning. It's unfortunate that fate has surrounded it with a Char Hut, a Dunkin' Donuts, and a country/western bar, since that tempers the continental effect somewhat. No matter the neighbors, this is a cozy, quaint place that apparently has no contemporaries. Chef Per Jacobsen masterminds an extravagant assortment of meatcentric meals and (mostly) high-end European wines. Yet it's the elegant Sonoma salad (with chicken, raisins, walnuts, apples, Gorgonzola, and sweet balsamic) that has become the restaurant's signature dish. Schnitzel - and strudel for dessert -- are big favorites as well. As far as craving different tastes and textures, Jacobsen will amaze you with a pté of duck and port, foie gras with compote and cognac, and Danish meatballs with red cabbage.
